UPEA 2nd Vice President Elections Begin Feb. 1st

UPEA 2nd vice president elections will be held Feb. 1. Please become familiar with the candidates and make an informed decision. Within UPEA, the second vice president’s responsibilities include:

  1. Serving as chairman of the Resolutions Committee, which reviews resolutions and makes recommendations to General Council and proposes a platform for the coming year.
  1. Represents the State Board as a voting member of the CAPE Committee.

I feel the future of UPEA depends upon the strength and voice of its’ members.  By working to coordinate and facilitate the needs and interests of UPEA’s diverse membership, we will be improving the quality and direction of the association’s communication to its members and the general public.

Over the years we have talked about the importance of being a member of UPEA.  It is important to remember that UPEA is a grassroots member run organization and not a union,.

It is important to the future growth and leadership of UPEA to ensure continued dialogue between its members and the elected officers of the association.  UPEA will continue to be the voice of public employees.  I want to improve the communication between the association’s leadership and its member.

As an officer of UPEA my goals will be to:

  • Help staff lobby elected officials for pay increases and to fund benefits.
  • Educate public employees about the value of being a UPEA member.
  • Inform the general public about the difference between UPEA and a union in a right-to-work state.
  • Tell the general public how Utah works better and more efficiently because of public employees.

Together our voices will make a difference.  The bigger the voice, the bigger the difference!

We should never assume someone else will take care of our problems for us.  UPEA is your voice!

My name is Lori Benton. I am currently employed by the Division of Finance as a Payroll Specialist.  I started my state employment in May 1996 at the State Office of Education.  During my employment at Office of Education, I kept hearing about, and seeing flyers for meetings about this UPEA group.   On several occasions, I thought to myself, I should check that out and see what they were all about.

Although I don’t remember much about the meetings I attended back then, I know I liked what they stood for and they were doing good things for state employees.  I joined this wonderful organization in Nov 1999. I attended my first meeting as a new member, and I was elected Chair of our District.  I am not sure if they thought, hey let’s get the new person before she decides not to attend and this way we can make her continue to attend, or if they really thought I could do the job.  I have neither regretted nor looked back, and really enjoy being a part of UPEA.

Throughout the years of being a member of UPEA, I have held several different positions in the district.  I have been Chair, Vice Chair, and secretary.  I also served 2 years on UPEA State Board and currently serving as Advisory Council Member.  UPEA is our voice on the hill.  We as an organization are busy before, during and after legislation keeping track of bills that affect State Employees compensation and benefits.  We strive to elect Public Employee friendly candidates so that our voice will be heard, by us, the state employees.

The time is now; we need more people to get involved.  I will do my best to achieve this goal.  There are many committees to serve, and I want to make employees more aware of what they can do to help our voices be heard.

I have the drive, determination and will do what it takes to keep the goals that UPEA has set forth. I am running for 2nd VP and would appreciate your vote in February.

Winter 2016 Standing Committee Updates

Membership Services and Public Relations Committee

At the last UPEA Membership Services and Public Relations Committee meeting, Pam Sorensen drew the first quarter (July to September 2016) winner for UPEA’s Recruiter Giveaway program.  The winner was Tara Brunatti from District 10, Salt Lake Valley Local Government District, who will receive a $50 check.  During the quarter there were 53 recruiters and 189 new members.

The committee will draw the second quarter (October to December 2016) winner on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at the UPEA office.  If you would like to be in the drawing, ask your co-workers to join UPEA online at https://upea.net/join-today/ and list you as the recruiter!  In addition, both of you will receive the $20 recruiter/$20 new member incentive.

Grievance Committee

Last month the Grievance Committee met and discussed the Salt Lake County grievance and appeal process.  Unlike the state where the fourth level of review is the Career Service Review Office, Salt Lake County’s fourth level of review is the Career Service Council.  The individuals who serve on the Career Service Council cannot be public employees or employed by Salt Lake County.

The Grievance Committee also reviewed a previous Salt Lake County suspension case UPEA handled last winter.

The Committee’s next meeting will be on Thursday, Jan. 26,  at 6 p.m. at the UPEA office.  The committee tentatively plans to discuss a previous state of Utah termination case where the association prevailed and the termination was overturned.  If you are interested in attending the next committee meeting, contact Christy Cushing at (801) 264-8732 ext. 218 or christy@upea.net.  If you have questions related to the grievance process, contact your UPEA staff representative.

UPEA Election Day Celebration

The Citizen Action by Public Employees (CAPE) Committee is made up of Utah Public Employees’ Association (UPEA) members who volunteer their time to interview and endorse public employee-friendly candidates.  CAPE Committee members ensure that public employees have a voice and are represented in the political process.  Jeff Horrocks, who currently serves as the committee’s chairman, states that, “CAPE provides public employees, who may not have the time or resources, the opportunity to have a voice in the election and know that the candidates endorsed by the Committee will represent their interests and rights.”

The CAPE Committee has been meeting since the beginning of the year to discuss, interview, and endorse political candidates who are running for office.  Candidates are asked about their views on a variety of public employee issues such as compensation, benefits, retirement, healthcare, and privatization.  The responses by the candidates are one factor in determining whether the committee will endorse a particular candidate.  They also take into account the candidate’s voting history (if he or she is an incumbent), and if he or she has been favorable of UPEA issues in the past.  After the formal interview process, the committee discusses whether the candidate will continue to support public employee issues once elected.  An endorsement vote is taken to determine whether the committee will endorse or remain neutral in a specific race.

It is important to endorse and elect public employee-friendly candidates.  These are the individuals who determine and establish pay and benefits.  Through the power of voting, public employees decide who will represent them on crucial issues.
